What you can learn at the department

Our undergraduate program provides a comprehensive overview of cellular structures and biomolecular dynamics in microorganisms, plants and animals. The purpose of our educational program is to foster scholars/engineers who can create novel technologies to resolve bioengineering problems involved in food production, health promotion, anti-aging, utilization of renewable resources, environmental preservation, and so on. Our curriculum is designed so that fundamental subjects (e.g., biochemistry, structural biology, microbiology, genetic engineering, and culture engineering) and advanced subjects (e.g., production of bioactive substances, nano-molecule science, bioinformatics, omic sciences, plant engineering, iPS/ES cell technology, and clonal cell technology) are linked together.

What you can learn at the department

The Department of Local Produce and Food Sciences (LPFS) offers a diverse and unique program for students from abroad to develop skills that will help them face and solve the recently growing global food crisis in a practical manner.
The LPFS curriculum was developed and is implemented so that students can comprehensively study food and agricultural sciences through the practice of growing and processing fruits and vegetables, and are trained to eventually be able to develop and find better methods and applications of agricultural production based on scientific methods.
In the 19th century, Yamanashi was the first prefecture to begin wine production in Japan. The Institute of Enology and Viticulture at Yamanashi University is the only institute in Japan for the scientific study of wine technology.
LPFS also provides a “Wine Science Education Program” aiming to nurture wine specialists who can research better ways of growing grapes and making refined wine by enology and viticulture.

What you can learn at the department

We foster capable people who can contribute to the conservation of soil, water and air, all of which play a central role in the continual production of biological resources such as agricultural crops. We also train students to contribute to the development of a rich and sustainable society that can coexist with nature by harmonizing fields of biological resource production with the surrounding ecosystem. We provide a practical program based on scientific knowledge of the environment which aims to help students master various field research skills, environmental information analysis skills (such as geographic information systems and environmental impact assessment technology), and environmental management techniques (such as the development of environmental conservation plans). At the same time, through research, assessment, and management of the natural environment, we engage in education and research for developing biological resources and for solving environmental, energy, and food issues on regional and global scales.

What you can learn at the department

Students are to learn about the so-called symbiosis of society and related institutions. In addition, they can learn about different fields of social science, including distribution economics, corporate management, local economy, and local governmental administration, with emphasis on entrepreneurship, development of new products, production, distribution and sales. Students will learn quantitative methods of analysis in addition to qualitative ones in the different fields. Through this gained knowledge, they will develop the ability to assess problems and propose alternative solutions in these fields.
